Founding Visionaries
Golf legend Bobby Jones is the backbone of Augusta National. He birthed the revolutionary concept in the early 1930s, shortly after retiring from competitive golf, having completed the Grand Slam in 1930. Jones was a man of immense talent and vision, remembered as the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete nationally and internationally. He envisioned creating a golf course to challenge the world’s best golfers while embodying the game’s strategic ideals and aesthetic.
The real spark flashed when Jones encountered a kindred spirit in Clifford Roberts, a sharp-witted financier passionate about golf. Their souls connected instantly, and they began seeking the perfect location for their dream course. The pair’s relentless search landed them in Augusta, Georgia, where a 365-acre Fruitland Nursery caught their attention, strategically situated on a vast parcel of land characterized by rolling terrain, vibrant azaleas, and towering pines.
Course Design
Having found the perfect location, Jones and Roberts onboarded renowned golf course architect Alister MacKenzie to bring their vision to life. At this time, MacKenzie was famous for creating the perfect blend of challenging and enjoyable courses, and he got to work alongside Jones to design Augusta National. Every partnership thrives on shared vision and commitment, and the duo’s mutual passion for strategic complexity and natural beauty helped shape the course to blend seamlessly with its environment.
Once the conceptualization phase was complete, the construction of Augusta National began in 1931, taking two years to materialize in 1933. MacKenzie’s historic design emphasized wide fairways, strategic bunkering, and dramatic elevation changes, with each hole crafted to put a player’s skill, mental fortitude, and creativity to the test. Sadly, MacKenzie passed away before Augusta National’s official opening, but his legacy forever lives on in the course’s timeless design.
The Birth of The Masters Tournament
1934 was a historic year, as Jones and Roberts launched The Augusta National Invitation Tournament, later renaming it The Masters. The tournament took a different path from other events of the day, introducing unique traditions that later became the hallmarks of The Masters. Roberts’ astuteness birthed a pristine presentation, from the iconic green jackets awarded to champions starting in 1949 to the immaculate course condition.
As expected, The Masters swiftly gained recognition and prestige, attracting the world’s best golf talent. The tournament is home to many of golf’s greatest moments, from Gene Sarazen’s famous Shot Heard ‘Round the World in 1935 to Tiger Woods’ record-breaking victory in 1997.
