The R&A have announced a new fan code of conduct ahead of the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale to help prevent any potential spectator-related incidents at the final men’s major of the season.
Titled “The Open Commitment”, the new set of rules “celebrates the unique atmosphere that has defined golf’s original Championship for more than 165 years”.
The five main principles outlined in The Open Commitment are:
- Respect the Players
- Respect the Links
- Respect Each Other
- Be Aware
- Enjoy Responsibly
The R&A state that any serious or repeated breach of these principles may result in being removed from championship grounds without a refund.
Chief executive if The R&A, Mark Darbon said: “The atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.
“The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure The Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all.”
Over the past year, there has been a rise in spectator-related incidents outside the gallery ropes during high-profile events. Last year’s Ryder Cup saw Rory McIlroy receive ugly abuse from certain sections of the American crowd at Bethpage Black with his wife Erica also subject to alcohol being thrown at her. The Northern Irishman condemned the behaviour as “unacceptable and abusive” and he later received a “lovely” apology from PGA of America chief executive Derek Sprague.
More recently, last month’s U.S Open saw eventual winner Wyndham Clark subject to jeering and shouting from the New York crowd at Shinnecock Hills.
