Scott Jamieson claimed his first success on the DP World Tour for 14 years thanks to a two-shot victory at an eventful Nexo Championship.
The 42-year-old Scot, whose only previous triumph on the circuit came at the 2012 Nelson Mandela Championship, entered the final round at Trump International Golf Links in contention but three shots off overnight leader Shaun Norris of South Africa. But it was England’s Matthew Jordan who came out the block fast with birdies at the 1st, 3rd, and 7th to storm out in front. However, Jamieson ensured he stayed in touch with birdies at the 4th and 7th. Jordan’s early momentum then stalled as a result of a double-bogey at the 9th. Further good news came Jamieson’s way as Norris was given a two-shot penalty for kicking a replaced divot from under his feet at the 5th. This meant the Scotsman found himself with a one-shot lead, which he took advantage of, putting his foot on the accelerator with consecutive birdies at the 10th and 11th to extend his lead to three. Despite a blip at the 13th where he saw his lead cut down to one as Jordan sought to recover his form from earlier in the day, Jamieson kept his cool comfortably seeing out the rest of his round to card a 5-under 67, end on 11 under, and seal a momentous win.
“Fourteen years, that’s wild,” Jamieson said following his victory. “It’s just so tough, so hard to win. I was so patient all day… just can’t believe I’ve won.”
The win became even more memorable when he received a video call from U.S. President Donald Trump, who personally reached out to congratulate him. Trump has traditionally called the tournament winner to offer his congratulations.
“He was very complimentary and it sounds like he was actually watching it,” Jamieson told BBC Sport Scotland. “He said he was following along, so it was really cool… I mean he is the President of the United States.”
A late birdie helped Jordan secure a runner-up spot on 9 under while fellow Englishman Andy Sullivan claimed third two shots further back on 7 under.
