Mexican Player Abraham Ancer, Rising Golf Star

Ranked as number 41 in the world, Abraham Ancer has worked incredibly hard to sail up the rankings and be part of the PGA TOUR. He has had some great successes and, having only turned pro 6 years ago, continues to impress with his game, skill and famous swagger.

History

Back when he was in Sharyland High School it was clear that Ancer had talent. He was selected to play for Odessa Junior College. Ancer won five times and was given the Junior College Player of the year award, the Jack Nicklaus Award.

His wins continued through his sophomore year, a time where he broke records in the 2011 Desert Shootout. He continued playing throughout his time in university and then turned pro quickly after graduating from the University of Oklahoma, going on to join the Web.com Tour.

It is difficult to believe that only a year ago Ancer did not rank in the top 250 Official World Golf Rankings, and now he sits at 41. He has showcased some fantastic golf, such as his Emirates Australian Open win and his automatic qualification for the Open Championship at Portrush.

While Ancer holds dual citizenship, he has previously stated that he plays golf as a Mexican.  Representing Mexico as a pro golfer is very important to him and he is very vocal about the influence that Mexican golfers have had on his performance—specifically Lorena Ochoa and Gaby Lopez. He is keen to promote Mexico and is clearly very proud of his heritage.

His pride in Mexico has also helped him to develop ties with Miura and they have made Ancer their first PGA TOUR ambassador. Ancer has introducing Mexico to Miura, as it is the first deal of its kind for the brand.

Ancer has also had success in gaining sponsorship and in April 2019 he signed a one year deal with Psycho Bunny. The company stated that “he [Ancer] embodies the Psycho Bunny personality of sophisticated mischief.” This is an example of the types of larger brands that are starting to take notice of Ancer.

Ancer is one of the shorter PGA TOUR players, coming in at 5’ 7 but this hasn’t stopped his game. Even though his driving distance average is 295.9, he still hits a high percentage of fairways. All signs point Ancer in the direction of growing in fame and climbing further up the rankings. His two pro wins show how far he has come. This is one player worth keeping an eye on.

Personal Life

Ancer is the son of Abraham and Veronica Ancer and brother to Claudia and Sayra. His parents and siblings also hold dual citizenship and currently live in Mexico. Ancer has been linked with actress Marcela Cantu, but their relationship status has not been confirmed.

Ancer’s dad started to teach him golf when he was just 3 years of age and Ancer happily recalls the day he finally beat his dad at golf for the first time at age 10.

Ancer was raised with a strong work ethic and while he maintains a pro golfer life, training and preparing so that he is at the top of his game, he also has a strong business mind. In addition to his golf, he is also the co-founder of tequila brand Flecha Axul. The brand is advertising its new tequila but it is yet to hit the shops; if it’s anything like Ancer it will pack a punch and be the unexpected hit any party.
