Cameron Young sealed a long-awaited maiden PGA TOUR triumph thanks to a comprehensive six-shot victory at the Wyndham Championship.
The 28-year-old American, who was making his 94th start on the PGA TOUR, came into the final round at Sedgefield Country Club with a healthy five-shot advantage but nerves looked to potentially be getting the better of him after he bogeyed the opening hole. However, he shrugged that off in style with five birdies in a row to build his lead even further. He cruised through the following holes without any pressure from the rest of the field and was able to drop shots at the 16th and 17th without risking blowing his advantage. Young went on to card a two-under 68 to close on 22 under, end his winless drought, and become the 1,000th player to win on the PGA TOUR.
“I’ve been waiting for it for a while,” an emotional Young said who had previously recorded seven runner-up finishes on the PGA TOUR. “I never really thought I’d be that emotional about it. I wasn’t going to let it get away from me today.”
Fellow American Mac Meissner finished runner-up on 16 under while third was a tie between American Mark Hubbard and Sweden’s Alexander Noren both on 15 under. Defending champion Aaron Rai was in touching distance of the lead during the second round before play was suspended due to weather conditions but the Englishman ended the tournament in a tie for fifth alongside American duo Jackson Koivan and Chris Kirk on 14 under.
What is the next event?
The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the FedEx St. Jude Championship taking place between 7-10 August at TPC Southward in Memphis, Tennessee.
