Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spin the ball like the pros? We’re not talking landing a lucky shot every now and then, but doing it consistently and with confidence. Pros spend years perfecting their wedge shots, but the average golfer isn’t always able to dedicate that much time to those tricky shots from within 100 yards.
That’s where Rob Lang and his team at Indi Golf come in. As a scratch golfer working for companies such as Callaway, Odyssey, and True Temper, Lang gained expertise in designing clubs and decided to design a wedge that would allow golfers of any skill level to achieve tour player control and spin rates.
The StingRay Wedge To Optimize Your Spin
After thorough design, testing and research, Indi Golf introduced its first StingRay wedge with a proprietary groove shape, one that is neither the old box-shape, nor the contemporary v-shape. This proprietary design has steep walls to add grip, with a tapering slope and upper radius that is friendly to golf balls. The end result is TractionFace technology, which naturally creates the same launch conditions that pros strive for. The large open square grooves of the StingRay increase spin by 50% on a full swing measured using Foresight GCQuad. StingRay doesn’t conform to the Rules of Golf because the grooves are a little, too close together, a little too deep, and a little too wide.
“Professional golfers practice eight hours a day and hit over one thousand balls a session,” said Lang. “Our design team created the StingRay Wedge for the 99+% of golfers who love golf but don’t make their living playing the sport. Compiling decades of industry experience, creative thinking, and premium quality manufacturing, The StingRay delivers what we think golfers want – playability, lower scores, and more fun.”
Groove technology
As word spread about how well golfers were able to spin the ball with the StingRay wedges, Lang started to receive numerous requests for a conforming wedge that could be used in tournament play. Lang and his team went back to the drawing board and created the StingRayTT wedge. The StingRayTT wedge was engineered with grooves, which run along the entire length of the face to optimize launch, improve control, and increase spin. In order to conform to the rules of the game, Indi had to tweak the groove design slightly, but this design still increases spin by 20% on a full swing measured using Foresight GCQuad.
“After designing our original StingRay wedges, our challenge was to design grooves within the Rules of Golf that would still create optimal spin and outperform the competition and we successfully achieved that goal,” added Lang.
ScoopBack design to help prevent misses
In addition to unique groove technology, both wedges feature Indi’s proprietary ScoopBack technology that creates maximum forgiveness by moving mass higher in the face, and toward the toe. This optimizes the location of the club’s CG, making the head more stable on off-center contact, helping shots feel better, go straighter, spin more and end up closer to the hole. The ScoopBack design is not a muscle back or perimeter-weighted design but is a combination that brings the player the best of both worlds.
According to Lang, “Most casual players miss hit high on the face. ScoopBack technology makes those high face contact shots go farther and straighter. Traditional wedges lose so much performance when a player doesn’t make perfect contact, so we designed our wedges to be forgiving. All your shots go the same distance and fly straight.”
“Indi Golf is committed to designing quality products that will help golfers perform at their best and enjoy the game more,” continued Lang. “Our line of StingRay and StingRayTT wedges will teach players what a great wedge game looks and feels like. We feel wedges have not been researched and put on the same technology path as woods and irons, and we want to continue to close this gap and make the wedge game something that everyone can enjoy and use to improve their game and enjoyment.”
Includes lefties as well!
While initially only available in right hand models, newly introduced left hand models in both the StingRay and StingRayTT give lefties the opportunity to spin the ball like Phil!
The StingRay TT wedge is available in lofts of 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60-degrees, and conforms with the Rules of Golf. The StingRay wedge is available in lofts of 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60-degrees, and does not conform with the Rules of Golf. The left-handed models of both the StingRay and StingRayTT are available in lofts of 52, 56 and 60-degrees.
