It’s rare to find a landscape with geography as varied as Los Cabos—where deep, rocky arroyos stretch down to soft sandy beaches and vibrant green cacti and desert plants stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s exactly this variation in geography that excites both golfers and course architects alike, each understanding the unique element this unique combination brings to the game.
With Querencia’s extensive footprint across this rugged Baja terrain, the opportunity to craft a second world class 18-hole golf course that moves up and down ridgelines into the arroyo and plays with the dramatic natural elements was enough to entice renowned course architect, Tom Fazio to return to Querencia, where 25 years ago he created their original award-winning course, one of the first of its kind in Los Cabos.
Not a stranger to managing challenging terrain, when asked how this landscape was going to impact the new course, Fazio shared, “There is a lot a movement in the golf holes—a lot of natural framing and definition that really creates that interesting drama that is the signature of a quality golfing experience like Querencia.”
Courses
Querencia’s original course, Campo Bajo, Fazios’s first course design outside of the United States, is an exhilarating course for golfers of all levels. With its mix of sweeping ocean views, infinity greens, and undulating fairways, it’s easy to see why it maintained its ranking on the top 100 lists over the years.
With the second course, Campo Alto, Fazio’s focus has shifted to creating a distinctly different player experience while maintaining the high quality expected by Members and guests that know and love the original. With that in mind, Fazio created a routing with a non-returning design that moves through the most dramatic elevation shifts and landscape features, including wrapping around a lake. “The goal is to create an experience that uses a blend of 3s and 5s and 4s to move players up and down the scales of shot selections, leaving them with the feeling that each hole was wildly different than the last.” said Fazio.
Set to be a course that makes waves when it debuts in 2026, excitement is building within the Querencia community and beyond the gates of the private community. With construction currently underway and Fazio’s vision coming to life, it’s easy to speculate how Members will feel after each round.
“The first thought in your mind after you finish a game on the new course will be ‘can we go play again’, because what you just experienced was so interesting and fun,” says Fazio.
Community
