How Scottie Scheffler won in 2022

Scottie Scheffler rocketed to a five-stroke lead thanks to a second-round 67 and held on for his first major title. The 25-year-old Texan led by three strokes going into the final round and found himself ahead by only one when Cameron Smith birdied the first two holes. Scheffler opened it back up to three by pitching in for a birdie from 29 yards on the third hole while Smith was making a bogey. The margin was still three going to No. 12, where Smith hit his tee shot into the creek and triple bogeyed to drop out of it. Rory McIlroy charged from 10 strokes behind with a 64, but with Scheffler playing a solid final round, McIlroy couldn’t get close. Thanks to birdies on 14 and 15, Scheffler led by five going to the 18th where a meaningless four-putt double bogey left him with a 71 and a three-stroke win over McIlroy.

  • Scheffler ranked in the top three in scoring average on par 3s (T1/2.88), par 4s (T3/4.0) and par 5s (T2/4.5).
  • Scheffler played the last 12 holes of the second round in 6-under, with birdies on Nos. 7, 8, 12, 13, 15 and 16.
  • Scheffler ranked second in Scrambling, saving par on 69.57 percent of the holes where he missed the green in regulation.
  • Scheffler was T5 in Greens in Regulation (68.06 percent) and fifth in Putts Per Round (27.5).
