Austin Eckroat secured his first triumph on the PGA TOUR with a comfortable three-shot victory in the Cognizant Classic in Florida.

The 25-year-old American began the final day at PGA National, which was extended to Monday after play was suspended on Sunday due to severe rainfall, with a one-shot lead and did not fall from the position after carding a final-round 67 which included three birdies to seal a maiden PGA TOUR win in his second full year.

“I’m just really happy,” Eckroat said speaking to Golf Channel. “I’m happy with how I played the Bear Trap – it’s not a fun finish whenever you have to hold onto the lead! I’m just really happy with how I handled it.”

Ryder Cup winner Shane Lowry, who shared the lead alongside Eckroat and England’s David Skinns after three rounds, entered Monday with a three-shot deficit and kept himself in the hunt after saving par on the seventh but his hopes of gaining ground on Eckroat faded after he found the water twice. Lowry concluded the tournament on 13 under alongside Skinns, America’s Jake Knapp and Cameron Young, and South Korea’s Kyoung-Hoom Lee.

The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the Puerto Rico Open taking place between 7-10 March at the Grand Reserve Country Club.
