Best Putting Drills for Beginners to Master the Green

Measuring Tape Drill

Determining the putter length of each backstroke is crucial for a golfer, and the measuring tape drill helps you with that as you produce adequate power and speed from all distances. Choose a target and set down around five balls 5,10,20,30, and 40 feet from it, measuring the length of your full swing backstroke on every shot. A friend should mark your optimal strengths with a colored pen on the measuring tape, and you can use it to guide you on your putting exercises.

The Manilla Folder Putting Drill

The next lesson is on controlling the speed of your putts, brought to you by the Manilla Folder Putting Drill, which will help you avoid the dreaded 3-putt. On a level surface on the practice green, set a manilla folder around 6-10 feet away from you. Roll your putts gently to make them stop on the folder. Given the slippery fast surface of the folder, you’ll need to focus keenly on the speed of your putts, making you better in the process.

The 1-2-3 Putting Drill

As the name suggests, the 1-2-3 Putting Drill is just like dancing and aims to help you develop the rhythm of a steady, consistent putting stroke. Because most putts in a round are usually within 3-10 feet of the cup, place three balls in a straight line roughly 3,6, and 9 feet from the hole. Start putting the closest ball moving outwards and repeat this drill severally before heading out to a round.

Pull Back Putting Drill

One main reason why the Pull Back Putting Drill is so famous is that it helps de-stress your knee-knockers, allowing you to stare at the bottom of the cup. The 9-hole drill works best with some friends, and you should start by rolling your best putt on one ball roughly 10 feet away from the hole. Wherever the ball stops, pull it back roughly one putter length away from the hole and retake the shot. Rinse and repeat this process and keep scores as you go until you sink the ball. Next, try from 20 and 30 feet, aiming to improve your putting skills over time.

100 Straight Putts Drill

Although 100 putts might sound like a lot, this drill is quite enjoyable and will make you a master at making short putts consistently in no time. Stick a tee about 2-3 feet from the cup on a flat spot along the practice green. Aim a perfect short straight putt, sink it, and repeat the process 99 times. You will be surprised how your confidence fires up as you watch your form and alignment improve!

Parting Shot

You can only become a star golfer by working on your putting game. As you can see in the above drills, it’s not rocket science; anyone can become a pro in no time. Once you combine your driving prowess with your newly learned putting magic, you will enjoy lower scores and start walking with a new swagger.
