Cam Davis snatched a second Rocket Mortgage title of his career after Akshay Bhatia crumbled on the 18th, to claim a one-shot victory in Detroit.

The 29-year-old Australian began the final round at Detroit Golf Club trailing behind the overnight leaders, American Akshay Bhatia and England’s Aaron Rai. However, Bhatia had a chance to secure his third PGA TOUR victory with a 32-foot putt on the 18th hole but he fell short and also missed the par putt, squandering his opportunity.

As a result, Davis, who finished with a final-round 70 on 18 under, was gifted his second victory in the event, along with the $2.5 million prize. His first win came in 2021.

“From where I was a couple of weeks ago to today, it’s just completely different. I’m a little emotional actually,” Davis told CBS.

“I wouldn’t wish what happened to Akshay on anyone but I’ve done a lot of grinding to try and get myself out of a hole and to just all of a sudden do that, it’s pretty good.

“I’ve got so many people behind me that have helped me along the way. I had a lot of support to kind of get me out of the doldrums there. I saw a little bit of a spark last week but nothing to show this coming so this is great.”

This was a much needed win for the Sydneysider as he had been suffering a poor run of form since April. The victory marked his first top-10 finish in a PGA TOUR event since the Shriners Children’s Open in October 2023.

A dissapointed Bhatia when questioned about his faltering on the 18th, said: “That green’s old school, so a lot of slope, downhill left to right. It’s a tricky putt just to get the speed correct and I did such a good job all day of my speed being really good until that last hole.

“I hit a good putt, I probably just under-read it a little bit or it lacked a little bit of speed so nothing I can do about it.”

Bhatia and Rai both shot 72 in the final round, resulting in a four-way tie for second place at 17 under, alongside Davis Thompson and Min Woo Lee.

What is the next event?

The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the John Deere Classic taking place between 4-7 July at TPC Deere Run in Ilinois.
