LIV Golf’s season-ending Team Championship is reportedly being scrapped, despite no official confirmation from the league.
The $40 million Team Championship was scheduled to take place from August 27-30 at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Detroit. However, reports claim that players have been informed the event will not go ahead. LIV Golf has yet to make an official announcement regarding the tournament’s status.
Speculation surrounding the event has been building for several weeks. Tickets for both general admission and hospitality passes disappeared from the official LIV Golf website, while Fox also removed the tournament from its listings. There have also been reports that little to no major infrastructure had been built at the Michigan venue.
LIV Golf staff have reportedly been instructed to arrange travel home from Indianapolis rather than continue on to Michigan, suggesting that next week’s event in Indiana could now serve as the final tournament of the 2026 season.
The uncertainty also raises questions over how the season-long team competition will be concluded and whether the $40 million in team prizes will still be distributed. Several players have reportedly told The Telegraph that they remain unclear on how the situation will be resolved.
There had already been indications that the Michigan event was in doubt. Martin Kaymer said in late July that he believed ti was “highly likely” the tournament would not take place, while Cameron Smith said as recently as last week that he “would be disappointed” if the Team Championship were not to proceed. Players had nevertheless been preparing on the assumption that the event would go ahead.
Tyrrell Hatton’s appearance on the entry list for the DP World Tour’s British Masters, which takes place at the same time, has provided another indication that the LIV Golf event may not go ahead. Hatton’s registration for the DP World Tour tournament on the same dates suggests he may not be expecting to compete in Michigan.
