Lucas Glover made it back-to-back victories on the PGA TOUR thanks to a play-off victory over Patrick Cantlay in the FedEx St Jude Championship.
The 43-year-old, who triumphed in the Wydham Championship just a week before, made it two in two after hitting a par on the 18th, the final play-off hole, overcoming Patrick Cantlay at TPC Southwind.
Both had topped the leaderboard on 15-under after the 72 holes after Cantlay gained ground with a sublime six-under-par final round 64 which featured birdies on the third, sixth, 10th, and 15th. Cantlay had held a lead outright for a brief amount amount of time before Glover responded with a one-under 69 to finish 15-under and force the play-off.
Cantlay’s tee shot went straight into the water and Glover immediately took advantage making par which proved to be enough for him to seal victory.
“Closing holes here aren’t easy birdies, and aren’t easy pars really under pressure, so it was just keep fighting, stay close, stay close, and I was fortunate to get in a playoff,” Glover said.
“I said [after the third round] the guns would be coming, and they came. I was just last man standing this week.”
Victory means that Glover moves up to fourth in the FedExCup standings.
Eight-time PGA TOUR winner Patrick Cantlay recognised the tee shot on the play-off hole had cost him after he dragged himself into contention to win the tournament but stated he is excited with what to come.
“I obviously made a bad tee shot and paid the price,” Cantlay said. “I’m in a good spot and two big weeks coming up, so I’m looking forward to it.
“I’m obviously playing really well, and next week is a golf course that I enjoy, so looking forward to it.”
England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy both finished a stroke behind the leaders on 14 under while Taylor Moore finished in fifth on 12 under.
The next event on the PGA TOUR is the BMW Championship taking place between 17-20 August at Olympia Fields North Course in Illinois.
