Matt Wallace claimed his first DP World Tour victory since 2018 with a thrilling play-off thanks to at the Omega European Masters.
The 34-year-old Englishman, whose previous victory on the DP World Tour came at the Made in Denmark in September 2018, entered the final round at Crans-sur-Sierre with a four-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard but was pegged back by playing partner Spain’s Alfredo Garcia-Heredia after he birdied the last to force a play-off.
The 18th was replayed and Wallace came out on top after unlike Garcia-Heredia, managed to birdie the additional hole to take home his fifth DP World Tour title of his career.
“That’s a hard day,” Wallace stated, speaking to Sky Sports. “I felt like I played alright. I felt there was a score out there but I couldn’t get anything going. I just kept pushing and Alfredo did what he had to do at the end there.
“It’s a lot easier to make birdie when you need to on the last. I’ve been playing great and you don’t want to give it away. I stuck at it.”
It was a deeply emotional victory for Wallace, who apologized afterward for shedding tears as he reflected on the accomplishment.
For Garcia-Heredia, his wait for a first success on the DP World Tour continues.
Wallace’s countryman Andrew “Beef” Johnston ended the tournament in third on 10 under, marking his best tour result since August 2020. This emotional achievement comes after years of battling injuries and inconsistent form.
“There’s a lot of relief – it’s been a tough couple of years,” he said.
What is the next event?
