Mikael Lindberg clinched a first DP World Tour triumph and earned a ticket to the upcoming PGA Championship thanks to a two-shot win at the Turkish Airlines Open.
The 33-year-old Swede, who began the week ranked 220th in the world, came into the final round at The National Golf Club in Belek in a tie for the lead. However, in what was a rain-soaked Sunday, Lindberg went on to record a 3-under 69 to end the event at the top of the leaderboard on 10 under, two shots clear of playing partner Daniel Rodrigues of Portugal and Italy’s Guido Migliozzi.
The victory comes in his 70th appearance on the DP World Tour and comes after what was previously his best finish on the circuit where he came third at the Volvo China Open. As a result, it catapults Lindberg to seventh on the Race to Dubai standings.
In addition to sealing his place at the PGA Championship in two weeks time, the win also books him a ticket to the Genesis Scottish Open in July.
“This is a dream come true, I’ve been dreaming about this for so many years,” Lindberg said afterwards. “My feelings on this last hole, I almost felt dizzy and I almost felt I wanted to throw up.
“I was in the lead after the first round and I just felt like… I don’t know how to describe this, but it’s been mentally very tough pretty much the whole week. So it’s very nice to pull it off.”
What is the next event?
The next event on the DP World Tour schedule is the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship taking place between 7-10 May at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Spain.
