World No. 2 Rory McIlroy secured $1.6m for charity after winning the closest-to-the-pin tie-breaker in The Match 9 in Florida.

The Northern Irishman was pitted against Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson in a 12-hole skins game at The Park golf course.

McIlroy sealed victory in six out of the initial eight skins accumulating £630,000 ($840,000), while Thompson claimed the remaining two. However, to determine the overall champion, a closest-to-the-pin challenge from 100 yards was played, as none of the participants claimed the final four skins at stake.

McIlroy went first, executed his wedge shot, placing it slightly over four feet from the flag. None of the other players managed to better his shot, ultimately declaring McIlroy the winner.

He won 10 of the 12 available skins, leading to a total of £1.26m ($1.6m) for charity.

“It was a really cool night,” said McIlroy.

“I just think [I will remember] how much fun it was, being out here with Max and Rose and Lexi and playing at such a great facility.”

This game marked McIlroy’s second time taking part in The Match series, the first being when he and Tiger Woods were defeated by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in the seventh edition.

This was the first time that The Match series included female players, with Thompson and 20-year-old Zhang, who won on her LPGA debut last June at the Mizuho Americas Open, participating.
