Scottie Scheffler edged out countryman Collin Morikawa in a tense final round to secure his fifth PGA TOUR triumph of the year at the Memorial Tournament.
The World No. 1 entered the final round at Muirfield Village with a four shot advantage over Morikawa, Adam Hadwin, and Sepp Straka but pressure from the chasing pack meant that his lead was reduced to one after Morikawa sunk a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-three 12th.
With one to play, Scheffler holed a five-foot putt to card a far-from-perfect two-over 74 and finish the tournament on 8 under, which was enough for him to seal the victory over Morikawa.
“I didn’t do a whole lot well but I did enough to get it done,” said Scheffler. “I feel like I’ve had some close calls in this tournament. The golf course was playing so tough, firm and fast – 16, 17 and 18 were brutal.
“But it was a fun test of golf, I like it when it gets hard.”
This victory means that Scheffler has joined golfing legend Tiger Woods as the only players to have won the PLAYERS Championship, Masters, and Memorial Tournament in the same year.
Collin Morikawa carded a one-under 71 to finish a shot back on 7 under while Hadwin fell back after sinking five birdies in 11 holes to end the tournament in third on four under. Straka also fell away to finish tied-fifth alongside England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg.
