The Old Course at St Andrews is to undergo major changes in preparation for the 155th Open Championship in 2027.
The iconic links course, known for being the oldest in the world, will have work begin on it from the start of November which will see a number of “carefully-planned programme of enhancements and restoration” proposed by the R&A and St Andrews Links Trust.
The changes will extend the total course length by 132 yards, bringing it to 7,445 yards, through the addition of new championship tees and modifications to existing ones.
The 11th and 16th will have their existing tee boxes enlarged from their current position while the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th will have fresh tee boxes added. Only one hole—the 12th—is slated to be slightly shortened as part of the planned changes.
Other changes include the restoration of an “historic playing route” to the left of the Principal’s Nose and Deacon Sime bunkers located on the 16th with two additional bunkers also being added to the fairway. The 6th and 10th will also witness the addition of new bunkers while the 2nd will also experience bunker work with the two drivable bunkers to be relocated further down and towards the left of the fairway and the 17th set to have its famous Road Hole bunker “sympathetically restored”.
In a statement on the planned changes, R&A CEO Mark Darbon said: “Working with St Andrews Links Trust we have commissioned Mackenzie & Ebert to carry out a carefully planned programme of work to enhance and restore the challenge of the Old Course in a few key areas.
“Our approach is grounded in deep respect for the course’s unparalleled history.
“We believe this work is important in ensuring the Old Course continues to evolve and challenge the world’s best golfers in the years to come while enhancing the experience of local and visiting golfers.”
CEO of St Andrews Links Trust, Neil Coulson, added: “Every generation has played a part in shaping the Old Course, and this latest programme continues that long tradition.
“The work will restore features that have changed subtly over time and refine others to preserve the course’s unique character.
“Our guiding principle is simple: to protect what makes the Old Course so special while ensuring it continues to offer a fair, challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of every level. The Old Course has never stood still. Its enduring greatness lies in its ability to adapt while retaining its soul.”
Over the years, the Old Course has undergone several notable adjustments, though it has not undergone any major changes since 2015.
The 155th Open Championship will take place at St Andrews between 15-18 July, 2027.
