In September, all roads will lead to Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, for the biennial Ryder Cup contest. Team Europe will seek to build on their 2023 win at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome and claim the title on foreign soil, while Team USA will aim to leverage home advantage and the charged New York crowd to reclaim the trophy.

The Ryder Cup is undoubtedly one of golf’s most prestigious events. It’s a cultural phenomenon that symbolizes national/continental pride, competition, and camaraderie, encapsulating the fierce rivalry between Europe and the United States. The tournament format pits team spirit against individual brilliance, and below, we delve into the key elements shaping the journey to the 2025 Ryder Cup tournament.

2025 Host Venue: Bethpage Black

Bethpage Black is one of the world’s most revered public golf courses, located in Farmingdale, New York. Golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast designed the course in 1936, creating an enigma that challenges even the most skilled golfers. The warning sign on the first tee says it all: “The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers.”

Every hole at Bethpage Black presents a unique test, with the 15th and 17th the standout challenges. The 7,459-yard par-71 layout is a masterpiece of design and difficulty, demanding top-level strategy, precision, and endurance. The course is not for the faint of heart, with players navigating deep bunkers, narrow fairways, undulating greens, and thick rough.

Bethpage Black has successfully hosted major championships such as the U.S. Open (2002, 2009) and the PGA Championship (2019). It is famed for its electric atmosphere, with charged local crowds adding to its charm. As a public course, it’s open to everyday golfers who want to walk in the footsteps of legends and test their golf skills on an iconic, extremely difficult stage.

Team USA: Redemption or Dominance?

Two-time Ryder Cup player Keegan Bradley will captain Team USA, with Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, and Brandt Snedeker as vice-captains. Team USA won in dominant fashion the last two occasions the tournament took place in America, with their last victory at Whistling Straits in 2021. Nonetheless, the team will be wise not to forget the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012 when they lost to Team Europe on home soil.

Qualification:

The USA runs a Ryder Cup Team Points Race that allows six players to qualify, with the captain getting six wild card picks. The race officially began at the Players Championship in March 2024, with the four men’s majors summing up the only 2024 events that count towards qualification. In each event, golfers earned one point for every $1,000 in prize money.

LIV Golf players will earn points through major championships, with Bryson DeChambeau being the only golfer currently in a position to qualify for the U.S. team. His victory at the U.S. Open and second place at the PGA Championship in 2024 secured him 6993.00 points. The points for the 2025 season (number of points and specific events) will be communicated as the PGA TOUR schedule takes shape.

Below are the top six American players as of this writing:

  1. Xander Schauffele – 9718.46 points
  2. Scottie Scheffler – 9145.56 points
  3. Bryson DeChambeau – 6993.00 points
  4. Collin Morikawa – 4638.13 points
  5. Brian Harman – 2379.15 points
  6. Wyndham Clark – 2228.21 points
