Team Europe: Building on Momentum

Europe will enter the 2025 Ryder Cup tournament as defending champions after beating the U.S. team 16.5-11.5 in Rome in 2023. Former World No. 1 Luke Donald will return as the team’s captain, with Edoardo Molinari and Thomas Bjorn returning as vice-captains. Donald brings a wealth of experience to the European side; having won all four Ryder Cups he played in as a golfer.

The last time Team Europe won on American soil was at the 2012 ‘Miracle at Medinah,’ where they produced a historic final-day comeback. The side will be seeking to rebuild that moment, with Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy quoted as saying, “I’ve said this for the last probably six or seven years to anyone that will listen: I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup. And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.”

Qualification:

The Europeans have adjusted their team selection criteria, with PGA TOUR performances now being given far more weight than in the past. Previously, three players qualified from the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai and another three from the world rankings, but now six players will qualify via a single Ryder Cup Points List. The captain will also have six wild card picks to fill his team.

LIV Golf players such as Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton will earn points primarily at the majors, but Donald can select them among the six captain’s picks if they remain DP World Tour members by paying fines to play LIV events.

In each event, points will be distributed as follows:

  • The Majors – 5,000 points
  • The Players Championships, PGA Tour’s signature events, and FedExCup Playoff events – 3,000 points
  • DP World Tour’s Rolex Series events and regular PGA Tour events – 2,000 points
  • Europe’s ‘Back 9’ series of events – 1,500 points
  • DP World Tour smaller events and PGA Tour opposite-field events – 1,000 points

The European team qualification process began with the British Masters on August 29, 2024, starting a series of tournaments in the ‘Back 9’ swing. The points list will end on August 24, 2025, at a tournament to be announced.

Below is the current European leaderboard as of writing:

  1. Rory McIlroy – 792.07 points
  2. Rasmus Højgaard – 706.53 points
  3. Tyrrell Hatton – 587.84 points
  4. Matt Wallace – 505.42 points
  5. Paul Waring – 465.13 points
  6. Niklas Nørgaard – 419.73 points

The Format: A Test of Versatility

The Ryder Cup features an American and a European team, each comprising twelve players. The tournament involves 28 match-play competitions played over 18 holes from Friday to Sunday. The format combines team and individual events, testing players’ versatility and teamwork and rewarding adaptability.

Four fourball matches and four foursomes matches occur daily on Friday and Saturday, with four matches in the morning and the other four in the afternoon. The captain can choose any eight players for each session over these two days. All team members play on Sunday when there are 12 singles matches.

Each match involves:

  • Fourball: Two teams of two golfers each face off, with each golfer playing their own ball. On a particular hole, the better score of the two golfers in a team counts as the team’s score. The team whose individual golfer has the lowest score wins each hole.
  • Foursomes: Two teams of two golfers each face off like in fourball, but golfers on the same team take alternate shots playing the same ball on a particular hole. Foursomes require chemistry and strategy, as one team member tees off on all the odd-numbered holes and the other on all the even-numbered holes. The team that completes each hole in the fewest shots wins each hole.
  • Singles: Standard match play competition between two golfers where every point counts.

Each match’s winner scores a point for his team, and if there is a tie after 18 holes, each team gets half a point. The Ryder Cup winner is the first to attain 14.5 out of a cumulative 28 points, and if the teams tie at 14 points each, the team who held the trophy before the contest retains it.
