Tiger Woods has revealed that he has undergone surgery after suffering a ruptured Achilles casting doubt over his major season and future on the PGA TOUR.

The 49-year-old last took part in a PGA TOUR event in July 2024 at the Open Championship and had hopes of making a comeback in next month’s Masters. However, the 15-time major winner, who has been playing on a limited schedule due to injuries from a February 2021 car crash and multiple subsequent procedures, revealed in a social media statement that he recently underwent surgery on his Achilles.

“As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” said Woods.

“This morning, Dr Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon.

“I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab, thank you for all the support.”

Dr Stucken added that the surgery “went smoothly” and that he would “expect a full recovery.”

Since 2014, Woods has played in 83 PGA TOUR tournaments, with just three wins, and he’s missed more cuts (16) than he’s finished in the top 10 (14).

Rory McIlroy, who co-founded TGL alongside Woods believe that he will not make a return to the PGA TOUR until 2026.

“It sucks,” McIlroy said. “He doesn’t have much luck when it comes to injuries and his body.

“Achilles surgeries obviously aren’t fun. [I’m] hoping he’s in good spirits and hoping he’s doing OK.

“We obviously won’t see him play golf this year, and hopefully we see him maybe play in 2026.”

He was set to make his return at the Genesis Invitational but withdrew from the event due to the death of his mother. He also pulled out this week’s PLAYERS Championship and this setback means he is a big doubt for the first major of the season.
