William Mouw produced a stunning final-round 61 to charge up the leaderboard and claim a narrow one-shot victory at the ISCO Championship for a maiden PGA TOUR victory.
The 24-year-old American rookie, making his 20th start, entered the last day at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville trailing overnight leader and fellow countryman Paul Peterson by seven shots but fired eight birdies in a 13-hole run including birdies at the first three holes as well as the 7th and 8th to catapult to the summit of the leaderboard. He closed with nine-under 61 to end the tournament on 10 under and record the lowest score of his career so far.
Mouw then had to endure an agonising two-hour long wait to see if his advantage at the top would be enough. Victory was confirmed when Peterson was unable to convert a 55-foot birdie putt at the last as he went on to card a final-round 69 to end a shot back.
“I did all I can out there and played really good golf and left it all out there,” Mouw said. “I guess I broke the course record, too, which is cool.”
The win for Mouw means that he has received a two-year exemption and a place at next year’s PGA Championship.
Spain’s Manuel Elvira completed the top three after carding a 7-under 66 to finish two shots further back.
