Ben Griffin etched his name into the PGA TOUR history books thanks to an impressive two-shot victory at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.
The 29-year-old American came into the final round at El Cardonal at Diamante two shots behind overnight leader Garrick Higgo of South Africa but found his stride from the 8th as he sunk five consecutive birdies to leap to the summit of the leaderboard. His victory was all but cemented at the 16th with a sublime 25-foot birdie putt before safely navigating the 17th and 18th to card a 9-under 63, finish on 29 under, and claim his third victory of the season.
In what has been a breakout year for Griffin, who has now moved up to No. 9 on the Official World Golf Rankings, he has now become only the seventh player in PGA TOUR history to earn their first three victories in the same season. He also joins the world’s top two Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as the only players to have achieved three or more wins this year.
“I got off to a great start, honestly, making some birdies,” Griffin said reacting to his win. “I feel like I’ve done that a lot in final rounds recently when I’ve had a chance to win, so that was nice.
“But after making a few birdies early, I kind of pushed myself a little bit harder than the past few weeks when I was in contention to kind of keep the pedal down. Fortunately, the putter heated up, made a lot of putts on the back nine.
“Yeah, it was fun feeling the nerves down the stretch trying to hold things off. It was nice to make a couple down the stretch.”
Finland’s Sami Valimaki and American Chad Ramey ended T2 on 27 under, a result which confirms their playing rights for the 2026 PGA TOUR season.
Higgo’s could only settle for a T4 finish on 26 under alongside American Trevor Cone after he saw his hopes of victory vanish at the 12th when his tee shot went into the bushes leaving him to take a penalty.
What is the next event?
The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the Butterfield Bermuda Championship taking place between 13-16 November at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.
