Michael Brennan claimed a maiden PGA TOUR triumph on his first professional start with a convincing four-shot victory at the Bank of Utah Championship in Utah.

The 23-year-old American, who only took part in the FedExCup fall event as a sponsor exemption, entered the final round at the Black Desert Golf Course with a healthy three-shot advantage and never looked threatened. He extended his lead to five during the early stages on Sunday with three birdies in his opening five holes. Despite a slight wobble at the 10th which saw his lead cut back to three shots following a rare bogey and Philippines’ Rico Hoey making birdie, the Virginia native never let the pressure tell as he made further birdies at the 12th and 14th to keep the chasing pack at arm’s length. Pars at the 15th, 16th, and 17th and a bogey at the last were enough as he carded a final-round 66 to end on 22 under and collect his first title on the professional circuit.

“It means a lot,” Brennan said. “Golf’s a big part of my life. I try not to make it my entire life, but it’s a big part of what I do for a living, and to have success at the professional level, it’s an amazing feeling.”

He added: “It is a dream. My parents have kept things from what I wrote in kindergarten saying I wanted to play professional golf on the PGA TOUR.

“And now I’ve realised that dream. Not only do I get to play on Tour, I’m a Tour winner. I definitely have not settled in – I’m just hoping to get that scorecard correct.”

Victory means that he becomes the first sponsor exemption to win an event since Nick Dunlap won The American Express in January 2024. He also become the seventh player since 1970 to win within their first three starts.

Brennan has earned a two-year exemption status on the PGA TOUR allowing him to skip next year’s Korn Ferry Tour and has also guaranteed himself a spot at next year’s PGA Championship.

Hoey carded a final-round 67 to claim a runner-up finish on 18 under while there was a six-way tie for third featuring American quartet Matt McCarty, Justin Lower, David Ford, and Pierceson Coody, Canada’s Benjamin Silverman, and Denmark’s Thorbjoern Olesen all on 16 under.

Three events remain on the FedExCup Fall schedule as players continue to fight to retain their PGA TOUR cards for the 2026 season.

What is the next event?

The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule is World Wide Technology Championship taking place between 6-9 November at El Cardinal at Diamante in Mexico.
