The R&A have confirmed that the 2028 Open Championship, the AIG Women’s Open, and the Senior Open have been pushed back to avoid clashing with the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The summer games are set to take place between 14-30 July with the golf events to be held between 19-29 July, causing an overlap with a handful of tournaments on the regular calendar.
The 156th Open Championship, which traditionally takes place in the month of July, has be moved to the first week of August. Additionally, the 2028 AIG Women’s Open will now be held between 7-13 August and the ISPS HANDA Senior Open will be staged a week later between 14-20 August.
Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “We have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions.
“We appreciate the constructive discussions we have had with all of the stakeholders and believe that providing clarity on the dates now will assist with the planning of the global golf calendar in 2028. We can also confirm that The Open will be returning to its normal mid-July dates in 2029.”
The 2016 Olympics in Brazil saw the return of individual men and women golf events after a 112-year absence.
The 2028 Olympic golf competitions will be held at the Riviera Country Club and will debut a mixed men’s and women’s team format.
