Ewen Ferguson has secured a place at this month’s Open Championship following an emotional two-shot victory at the BMW International Open in Munich.
The 28-year-old Scotsman, who is ranked 168th in the world, hit a four-under in the final round at Golfclub München Eichenried to finish the tournament on 18-under and earn a third DP World Tour victory of his career and first since 2022.
He is also the first Scotsman to win on the DP World Tour since Robert MacIntrye in the 2022 Italian Open.
Speaking to Sky Sports following his victory, an emotional Ferguson, who had recently recovered from a recent bout of Vertigo, said: “I honestly can’t believe it.”
“The last four holes I felt like I was in a dream, I just didn’t think this was actually happening. It was crazy.
“I was hitting it so well, I was hitting it so much further than usual. I wanted to do it for my dad, my mum, my sister, my brother at home. I love them so much and every shot I hit I hit with them in mind.
“The exemption with this is so much weight off my shoulders. I’m so happy. Teeing it up in Troon, the Open Championship is a tournament that everyone wants to play in and I feel like I could do well there and the Scottish Open next week too.
“It’s such exciting times for me.”
This victory places Ferguson among the top five players within the top 20 on the Race to Dubai list—alongside Jesper Svensson, Laurie Canter, Nacho Elvira, and Matteo Manassero—who were not otherwise exempt for the 152nd Open at Royal Troon.
England Jordan’s Smith, who entered the final round tied for the lead alongside Ferguson, and Australia’s David Micheluzzi tied for second on 16 under while there was also a tie for fourth between England’s Matthew Southgate and Scotland’s Connor Syme.
The Open Championship will take place between 18-21 July.
What is the next event?
The next event on the DP World Tour schedule is the Genesis Scottish Open taking place between 11-14 July at The Renaissance Club in Scotland.
