Knight and Szokol Triumph at Great Lakes Bay Invitational

Cheyenne Knight and Elizabeth Szokol hung on for a one-shot victory at the Great Lakes Bay Invitational in Michigan.

Americans Knight and Szokol hit a combined five-under par 65 in the final round to edge out Matilda Castren and Kelly Tan, who birdie four of their final eight holes but did not manage to hit another on the last hole.

Knight and Szokol started the final round with a three-shot advantage over Castren and Tan. They secured three birdies on the back nine, finishing the week on 23 under.

This is the third time that Knight and Szokol have teamed up in this event but first time they have triumphed with Szokol earning her maiden LPGA title and Knight capturing her second.

“There was a lot of pressure,” Szokol said. “Starting the day with the three-shot lead was a great thing, but everyone was chasing us.

“In this format there are a lot of birdies, and Matilda and Kelly were playing great and started off really well. So it was definitely some pressure there.

“Cheyenne made some amazing putts coming in. I feel like we just were chatting down the fairways the whole day and trying to keep it light. It was great to have her by my side for the win.”

Three teams finished tied-third on 20 under: France’s Celine Boutier and Japan’s Yuka Saso; England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff and America’s Emma Tailey; and Norway’s Celine Borge and Germany’s Polly Mack.

The next event on the LPGA Tour is The Amundi Evian Championship taking place between 27-30 July at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France.
