Ruoning Yin made history by becoming the first Chinese golfer to win the LPGA Shanghai title on home soil thanks to a convincing six-shot victory at Qizhong Garden Golf Club.
The World No. 4 Shanghai native came into the final round a shot behind Japanese rookie Mao Saigo but produced a sublime performance in the final round carding an 8-under 64 which included birdies in six of her last eight holes to cruise to a fourth career LPGA Tour triumph.
“Winning at home has always been a goal of mine, and the trophy means a lot to me,” said Yin in tears afterwards. “Today is a day I will remember for a long time. I want to thank my team, my fans, my parents. Thank you for your support.”
“I think that birdie was the turning point today which gave me a lot of confidence to keep on,” she added. “My goal was to finish 23 under par. I think I can reward myself with a dessert.”
Saigo ended the event tied-second on 19 under alongside South Korea’s Sei-Young-Kim after shooting a final-round 71 and Kim birdied the last hole.
The likes of Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko did not take part in the event but are both set to return to the course in the next event.
