Scottie Scheffler heads into the Ryder Cup in strong form after claiming his sixth PGA TOUR victory of the season with a one-shot win at the Procore Championship.
The World No. 1 entered the final round at Silverado Resort a shot behind overnight leader and Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin and it was Griffin who made a promising start to the Sunday with three consecutive birdies. But Scheffler stayed right on Griffin’s heels with birdies at the third, fifth, and seventh on the front nine. Griffin bogeyed the fourth and then hit a run of nine consecutive pars to stall his final round.
Scheffler found himself at the summit of the leaderboard after Griffin bogeyed the 14th and he extended that lead thanks to a birdie at the 15th. This slip from Griffin proved costly as he was unable to recover as Scheffler fired a five-under 67 to earn his 19th career PGA TOUR victory.
“I knew I was going to have to have another really good day,” Scheffler said. “I was chasing down some pretty talented guys on the leaderboard.
“Fortunate to be the winner this week.”
He went on to explain that the event, which saw 10 of Keegan Bradley’s 12 Ryder Cup players participate, served as an ideal tune-up for the upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
“I think we’re all excited for the Ryder Cup to get here,” he said.
“This was a big step for us, getting all the guys together for this tournament to stay sharp and get ready.
“I’m excited to get it started.”
Griffin also turned his focus to the upcoming team event, emphasizing his commitment to putting in the work ahead of the Ryder Cup.
“It’s all good, I’ll get to work, I’ll look at things and I’ll practice hard this week and make sure I’m ready for the Ryder Cup.”
Fellow American Lanto Griffin hit a final-round 65 to finish third while there was a tie for fourth between countryman Jackson Koivun and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo.
What is the next event?
The next event on the PGA TOUR, following the Ryder Cup, is the Sanderson Farms Championship taking place between 2-5 October at The Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.
