Scottie Scheffler solidified his status as the world’s best golfer by capping off an incredibly successful year with a dominant victory at the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta to secure the FedExCup title.
The 28-year-old American entered the final event of the PGA TOUR season at East Lake at the top of the FedExCup standings with 6,615 points, over 1,000 ahead of nearest rival and fellow American Xander Schauffele in second.
But the World No. 1 was never under any significant pressure for the title as he seized control of the lead throughout the final day of the tournament, carding a four-under 67 to end on 30 under.
This victory means he has matched a record only achieved by Tiger Woods in 2007, winning seven times in a single PGA TOUR season.
A few of his most memorable triumphs of the season include his Olympic gold in Paris in August, his second Masters victory in April, and his achievement of becoming the first player to win the PLAYERS Championship on back-to-back occasions.
He also collected the mammoth $25m of the $100m prize fund bringing his official earnings for the season to approximately $62m, and breaking the record for the third consecutive year.
Scheffler finished four shots clear of Collin Morikawa in second on 26 under, who collected the runner-up prize of $12.5m with another American, Sahith Theegala, in third on 24 under.
Reminiscing on his previous performances at East Lake following his victory this year, Scheffler said “I try not to think too much about the past or think too much about the future, but two years ago was pretty tough, having a good lead going into the last round and not playing my best and then losing,”
“Then last year, I just had a pretty off week so was fairly disappointing. So to come in with a lead for the third time and be able to finish it off is definitely pretty sweet. I feel like I’ve lived almost a full lifetime in this one year.”
What is the next event?
The next event on the PGA TOUR schedule comes from the FedExCup fall campaign which tees off with the Procore Championship taking place between 12-15 September at Silverado Resort (North Course) in California.
