The Historic Masters Invitation
On a particular Monday in January 2023, Gordon Sargent received a phone call from an unknown number, although the caller ID tag sparked instant interest – it read Augusta National Golf Club. The gentleman on the other side then extended a special invitation for the NCAA individual champion to participate in the upcoming Masters Tournament between April 6th-9th, 2023.
Jokes do exist, especially among peers. The news sounded too good to be accurate, but then Sargent wondered which of his friends would pull such a prank, especially with an Augusta National caller ID.
Though the Vanderbilt star was to keep the information private till Thursday that week when the news would be made public, he immediately broke the news to his father, Seth. After a simple Google search, they found that the staffer who had called indeed worked for Augusta National.
An email confirmation sealed the deal, and even when Sargent told his Vanderbilt coach Scott Limbaugh about the invitation, the same air of disbelief sailed through.
That week, Sargent was training with his teammates for the Jones Cup in Sea Island, Georgia. As they watched TV on Wednesday, a Masters advert came on. Sargent had to innocently sit through as his peers gushed about watching the event live on television, unable to reveal that he would be participating.
Come April, Gordon Sargent will travel with his family, coach Scott Limbaugh and the whole Vanderbilt team to participate in the most iconic event in golf – The 2023 Masters. The world number 3 in the WAGR will join fellow amateurs such as Aldrich Potgieter, Matthew McClean, Harrison Crowe, Sam Bennett, and Ben Carr on the field.
Sargent becomes the first amateur player to receive a special Masters invitation since Aaron Baddeley in 2000.
Future
After such an incredible career as an amateur, Gordon Sargent will get the chance to face off with the sport’s most elite soldiers, such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, from April 6-9, 2023.
