Yurav Premlall produced an incredible display to claim his first DP World Tour title dismantling the rest of the field with an emphatic 14-shot victory at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship.
The 22-year-old South African entered the final round at Real Club de Golf El Prat with an already comfortable five-shot advantage but that only extended with six birdies on the front nine effectively putting the tournament beyond reach barring a dramatic collapse. Successive birdies at the 12th and 13th saw his advantage reach 14 shots to edge ever closer to Tiger Woods’ record winning margin of 15 shots at the 2000 U.S. Open. However, his first bogey of the round came soon after at the 14th and missed opportunities in the next couple of holes saw his lead drop to 12. But he found his birdie touch once more at the 17th to increase his lead to 13 and then finished with a flourish at the last adding a final birdie to card a remarkable course record three-under 63, matching his third round, to earn a maiden DP World Tour win in style claiming the second-largest win in DP World Tour history.
“I’ve worked so hard to get into this position and it’s so rewarding to finally see the results of it,” Premlall said. “The last eight or nine months have been such a struggle, just to build myself onto a platform where I knew I could give myself a chance to win.
“Obviously to end up in this position, I’m just so, so grateful. It’s just a dream come true. I can’t give myself enough credit today and I’m not really a person to say that, but that was probably the most complete performance I’ve ever put through.”
14 shots behind in second was fellow countryman Shaun Norris who carded a final-round 68 to end on 14 under while there was a three-way tie for third between France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy, South Africa’s J.C. Ritchie, and Spain’s Alejandro Del Rey.
What is the next event?
The next event on the DP World Tour, following the PGA Championship, is the Soudal Open taking place between 21-24 May at Rinkven International Golf Club in Belgium.
