Ko Jin-young defeated defending champion Minjee Lee in dramatic fashion to win the Cognizant Founders Cup for the third time in her career.
The South Korean, who won the competition in 2019 and 2021, was set for victory with an overnight lead and three holes remaining however, a bogey at the 16th meant that Minjee Lee could capitalize which she did with a birdie on the last to force the play-off at Upper Montclair Country Club.
The play-off took place at the par-four 18th which saw Ko secure the win with a par on the first extra hole with Lee only managing to three-putt for bogey.
This is the fourth consecutive LPGA Tour event which has seen the winner decided through a play-off.
This is Ko’s 15th LPGA Tour victory of her career and her three wins in this tournament are the most by any player in the 12-year history of this event.
“It was so windy, was too windy out there, so I thought if I play really well I could have a chance to win,” Ko said.
“So I really focused myself and focused shot by shot on every hole and didn’t look at the scoreboard. I didn’t think about the other players.”
AIG Women’s Open champion Ashleigh Buhai ended the tournament in third finishing on 10 under while Korea’s Hae-Ran Ryu finished a shot further back.
The next event on the LPGA Tour is the Mizuho Americas Open between June 1-4 taking place at the Liberty National Golf Course in New Jersey.
