Nelly Korda has matched the record for the most consecutive wins on the LPGA Tour thanks to a two-shot victory in the Chevron Championship.
The World No.1 has been on a extraordinary run since the turn of the year with victories in the LPGA Drive On Championship, Seri Pak Championship, Ford Championship, and T-Mobile Match Play but with victory in the first major of the year has now equalled the record for the most consecutive victories on the tour matched by America’s Nancy Lopez and Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam.
Korda entered the final round with a one-shot deficit, behind South Korea’s Haeran Ryu but a three-under 69 at The Woodlands in Texas saw the 25-year-old finish on 13 under and claim her second career major title adding to her victory in the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship.
When asked about her achievement of five victories in a row, Korda said: “I don’t know, but I can finally breathe now.
“That back nine felt like the longest back nine of my entire life. It was a little bit of a grind on the back nine, but I’m happy to get the win.
“I was definitely starting to feel it on the back nine, just the nerves setting in. It’s a major. It’s everything that I’ve always wanted as a little girl.
“I can finally breathe now and just enjoy the moment because I was definitely really nervous. I feel sick to my stomach.”
Sweden’s Maja Stark produced a late flurry to climb up to second on 11 under while there was a tie for third between American Lauren Coughlin and Canada’s Brooke Henderson on 10 under. Ryu dropped down to fifth after carding a two-over 74 in the final round.
The next event on the LPGA Tour schedule is the JM Eagle LA Championship taking place between 25-28 April at Wilshire Country Club in California.
